There were more lives saved through organ donation in 2016 than ever before!
In the United States, 33,606 organ transplants were performed in 2016, which is 2,637 more than the previous record set in 2015. In 2016, Ohio also saw its highest numbers – 358 people shared the gift of life, making 1,135 organ transplants possible.
None of the above would be possible without the incredible generosity of those who gave the gift of life.
Despite these milestones, the need for organ donation remains. More than 118,000 people in the United States, including over 3,000 Ohioans, are currently waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. Every 10 minutes, a new name is added to the national transplant waiting list. Sadly, 22 people die every day waiting for an organ transplant. The good news: One person has the power to save 8 lives through organ donation and heal 50 more through tissue donation.
