During 2019, the number of generous heroes who gave the gift of life after their death topped 10,000 for the third straight year!
11,870 deceased donors made possible 32,321 organ transplants. The number of donors in 2019 reflects a 46 percent increase over the number of donors in 2011, the first year of the nine-year upward trend.
The United Network for Organ Sharing has been tracking data on transplantation since 1988. In the past 31 years, 801,163 life-saving transplants have been performed (thanks to deceased and living donors)! Numerous people have experienced the life-changing benefits of organ donation, including 471,790 kidney recipients, 173,801 liver recipients, 76,192 heart recipients, 41,282 lung recipients, 8,905 pancreas recipients and 3,107 intestine recipients.
At home in Ohio, there was also an increase, as 461 deceased organ donors gave the gift of life in 2019. Ohio’s generous heroes provided 1,564 organ transplants. An additional 352 transplants were made possible in 2019 through living donation.
Last year, Life Connection of Ohio also had a record-breaking year, as the organization coordinated the recovery of organs from 93 donors (19 more than the previous record), who provided 310 lifesaving organ transplants (71 more than the previous record).
None of these records would be possible without the generosity of those who gave the gift of life and their families. It is because of their incredible generosity that so many recipients are alive today and countless others are inspired to Donate Life.
