During 2018, the number of generous heroes who gave the gift of life after their death topped 10,000 for the second straight year!
10,721 deceased donors made possible 36,530 organ transplants, which marked the sixth consecutive year of growth for transplants in the U.S.
The United Network for Organ Sharing has been tracking data on transplantation since 1988. The numbers over the past 30 years are staggering — 758,034 life-saving transplants have been performed (thanks to deceased and living donors). That’s three-quarters of a million lives that have been saved through donation! Numerous people have experienced the life-changing benefits of organ donation, including nearly 450,000 kidney recipients and more than 70,000 heart recipients.
At home in Ohio, there was also an increase, as 431 deceased organ donors gave the gift of life in 2018, up from 412 in 2017 and 358 in 2016. Ohio’s generous heroes provided 1,356 organ transplants. There was also an impressive 10% leap in the number of registered donors.
Last year, Life Connection of Ohio coordinated the recovery of organs from 74 donors (10 more than in 2017), who provided 233 live-saving organ transplants (55 more than in 2017).
None of these records would be possible without the generosity of those who gave the gift of life, and their families. It is because of their selflessness that so many recipients are alive today and countless others are inspired to Donate Life.
